SMU took the 11th and final at-large spot in the College Football Playoff bracket, which was released during ESPN's live broadcast on Sunday (December 8).
SMU was defeated by Clemson, 34-31, in the ACC Championship Game Saturday (December 7) night and was a fringe team entering Sunday's reveal show. Alabama, which was in the final spot during last week's rankings, was the first team out.
Boise State and Arizona State took the third and fourth seeds, respectively, after winning their conference championship games Saturday night.
The College Football Playoff expanded from four teams to 12 teams this season with conference champions automatically included in to the field. The four highest-ranked conference champions are seeded Nos. 1-4 and receive first-round byes.
Seven at-large teams will be determined by the remaining highest-ranked teams and seeds 5-8 will host first-round matchups. Boise State and BYU, who both rank lower than Tennessee, are currently leading their respective conferences and would secure the No. 4 and No. 12 seeds, respectively
