Starz has greenlit a new Black rodeo drama set in Texas as part of its transition into fully owned programming.

The untitled drama is co-created by Kirk A. Moore, showrunner of the Black sci-fi comedy Damascus, and Mark Johnson, an executive producer for Netflix's Breaking Bad, according to Deadline.

The eight-part family drama centers on three siblings living on a ranch in Southeast Texas and focuses on a conflict over their mother’s legacy and their father’s unfinished business with the property.

Moore will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside Johnson, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns of Counterpart Studios. Some of Counterpart Studios’s best-known projects include the Showtime series Dexter: Resurrection and Dexter: Original Sin.

“Messy family dynamics, jaw-dropping spectacle, and an undeniable swagger—this is the kind of bold, original storytelling we’re proud to own from the ground up,” Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at Starz, told the outlet. “With a touch of urban grit and a huge dose of country soul, it’s Texas through and through. There’s nothing else like it, and we’re thrilled to bring it to Starz audiences.”

Starz described the series as being “infused with hip hop swagger and country soul.” It will serve as the network’s second fully owned series after Fightland (2025), a British boxing drama produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, following the network’s split from Lionsgate in May 2025.

“There’s a large content savings by controlling your IP,” Starz CEO Jeff Hirsch said.
