BET has indefinitely suspended two of its longtime award shows.
During a recent interview, CEO Scott Mills confirmed that the company was putting an indefinite pause on the BET Hip Hop Awards and the Soul Train Awards, per Baller Alert.
“For BET linear, we have suspended the Soul Train and Hip-Hop award shows. But we have a team that’s actively thinking about where those award shows might best live as the media climate continues to evolve," Mills said.
Launched in 2006, the BET Hip Hop Awards have honored rap culture, hosted electrifying performances, and paid tribute to staples of the industry. The Soul Train Awards, launched in 1987, have celebrated R&B and soul, spotlighting both legends and new emerging talents.
There is currently no confirmed return date for the two awards shows. Mills said the shows aren't being permanently canceled but will be "reimagined" to better suit today's media landscape.
“It’s not about them being over,” he said. “It’s about reimagining how we deliver them in today’s fast-changing media landscape.”
